The measure lengthens the review period for background checks from three days to up to 20. In a week filled with sweeping wins for the Democrats, it's looking like there may be more light on the horizon. The trial is set to begin later this month. Legal experts are saying that the additional charge gives jurors - 6 of whom have been selected - another option to convict Chauvin of murder. Jury selection for the case was suppose to begin on Monday but was pushed to Tuesday this week. The third-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years. A judge reinstated a third-degree murder charge against him after his attorneys failed to get the Supreme Court to block it.Īs reported by NBC, Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for about nine minutes May 25, is already charged with second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years, as well as second-degree manslaughter. Things are not looking good for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged with killing George Floyd in Minneapolis last May.
